Phosphate Removal - GFO
Phosphate control is important for every aquarium. Phosphorous is an essential element for all aquatic life including fish, plants and corals. Too much phosphorous, in the form of phosphate in the water, can stimulate undesirable algae growth on the sand, rock and glass. Filamentous hair algae is particularly troublesome when it overtakes reef aquariums. Phosphate build-up is caused by the natural breakdown of fish and invertebrate waste along with the decay of uneaten foods. One of the easiest ways to remove phosphate from the water is with granular ferric oxide or GFO for short. This iron-rich media absorbs and binds phosphate onto its surface area. GFO can be used loose in mesh media bags inside all-in-one aquarium filters, sumps and with a media contactor.
